For category A & B firearms (e.g rifles, shotguns & air rifles)
1. Join a shooting club, examples are;
Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) https://ssaa.org.au
Queensland Military Rifle Club QMRC https://qmrc.org
Shooters Union https://shootersunion.com.au
or get written permission from the owner of a private property (farm or station 40 acres or larger)
to hunt or recreationally shoot on that property (Police Form 1, Annexure Recreational Shooting)
2. Complete a Firearms Safety Course
As part of the safety course, further details will be provided to assist you in applying for a firearms license
3. Apply for a firearms license online at https://police.qld.gov.au
or submit a paper based application at your local Police Station (online applications are preferable)
For category H firearms (handguns) for Pistol Club competitions
1. Complete and lodge Police Form QP515 (statement of eligibility to join an approved pistol club).
2. When the statement is received, use this form as part of the process to join an approved Pistol Club.
3. An approved Pistol Club may allow you to participate in shooting competitions prior to becoming a member, by completing and signing a Police Form 33 declaration at the Club.
4. Complete 6 Months (probationary) membership.
5. During this period of time, participate in at least 3 compliant pistol club shooting competitions.
6. Have your Participation Record completed each time you attend for a shooting competition.
7. Complete a Firearms Safety Course category H.
8. When these steps have been completed, your Pistol Club will supply on request, a Police Form QP518A to be included with your license application for a category H firearm.
Transferring a Firearms License from another Australian State or New Zealand
Use the same procedure as above, however completing a Firearm Safety Course may not be required.
Queensland Police Weapons Licensing will advise you if required, when your application is made.
